5 things to ask your wedding videographer

Choosing a wedding videographer isn’t just about liking their work. It’s about trusting someone to capture one of the most important days of your life, without getting in the way of it.

If you’re speaking to a few different videographers and not sure what to ask, these are the five questions that will actually help you make the right decision.

1. What’s your filming style?

Not all wedding videos are the same, and this is probably the most important thing to understand early on.

Some videographers are very cinematic and stylised. Others are more documentary, focusing on capturing the day as it naturally happens.

Neither is right or wrong, but you want to make sure it matches what you’re looking for.

For example, my approach is a mix of both. I keep things natural and unobtrusive throughout the day, but the final film is edited in a cinematic way so it feels like a story rather than just a timeline of events.

If you don’t ask this question, you can easily end up with a video that feels very different to what you expected.

2. What exactly do you capture on the day?

This sounds obvious, but it’s where a lot of confusion comes from.

Some videographers will only cover the ceremony and a few key moments. Others will capture the full day from prep through to the evening.

It’s worth being really clear on things like:

  • Morning prep - is it included, and for who?

  • Ceremony - full recording or just highlights?

  • Speeches - fully recorded or edited into a shorter film?

  • First dance and evening - how much is covered?

At Everlight Studios, the focus is on telling the full story of the day, not just picking out a few moments. But every videographer structures this differently, so it’s worth checking.

3. How do you capture audio?

This is one that’s often overlooked, but it makes a huge difference to the final result.

Good audio is what brings your video to life. Without it, even the best footage can feel flat.

Ask how they record things like:

  • Vows

  • Speeches

  • Ambient sound throughout the day

Personally, I use a lapel microphone to capture vows clearly, along with ambient audio to keep everything feeling natural and immersive.

If a videographer can’t clearly explain how they handle audio, it’s worth digging a bit deeper.

4. How do you work on the day?

This is less about the final video and more about your experience.

Some videographers are very hands-on and direct a lot of the day. Others take a step back and blend into the background.

You want someone whose approach matches your personality.

Most couples I work with don’t want to feel like they’re on a film set. They want to enjoy the day with their friends and family, without being constantly pulled away.

So the way I work is simple - I’ll guide you when needed, but most of the time I’m just capturing things as they happen.

It’s worth asking this question so there are no surprises.

5. What do we actually receive at the end?

This is another area where packages can vary quite a bit.

Make sure you’re clear on:

  • Length of the highlight film

  • Whether you receive a full ceremony edit

  • Whether speeches are included in full

  • Delivery format and timescales

A shorter highlight video is great for sharing, but having the full ceremony and speeches is what lets you properly relive the day years later.

Ideally, you want both.

Final Thought

The right videographer isn’t just someone whose work looks good. It’s someone whose style, approach, and personality fit your day.

If you ask these five questions, you’ll quickly get a feel for who that is.

And when you find the right fit, it makes a huge difference - not just to the final video, but to how your day actually feels while it’s being captured.
